Toby Metzgen and Owen Edwardes hit the track at Mile End for the London Youth Games (LYG) ParaGames Athletics Event, held on 18 June 2026.
Metzgen celebrated a successful day, excelling in the 200m and 800m races and bringing home two gold medals.
Speaking to LYG, Metzgen said: “I don’t get to often race in front of large crowds and stands, so coming down that home straight, that was amazing.”
The event saw Miles Edwardes snatching the silver in the 100m race, and gold in the shot put.
Hilmy Shawwal was also seen on the day as an LYG ambassador, promoting the values and ethos of the initiative.
When asked about being an ambassador, he said: “Being an LYG ambassador is so amazing for me because I get to give back to the athletes that are coming through in London, especially the WAA athletes because I want to make sure they continue getting recognised the way I did.”
“Being a LYG Hall of Famer as well as a Paralympian, it's something everyone looks up to at LYG, and I want to continue inspiring the next generation.”
This ParaGames Event is part of LYG’s programme of 37 sports held each year, including other inclusive events such as football and swimming.
As a result, over 27,900 disabled young people have had the opportunity to participate, helping to provide everyone with a right to play sports.
Katie Berry, the Interim CEO of LYG, said: “Every young person deserves the chance to take part in sport and physical activity. In London, there is a real need for more inclusive opportunities, especially for children with additional needs.”
“By collaborating with Chaotic Community, we are increasing meaningful opportunities for more young people to build confidence, improve their wellbeing and feel less alone through the power of sport and physical activity.”
LYG has paved the way for future sporting stars, including David Weir, who originally represented Sutton around the age of eight or nine at the Crystal Palace Athletics Stadium.
In 2012, he was inducted into the Balfour Beatty LYG Hall of Fame, celebrating his international achievements alongside sports stars such as Rio Ferdinand and Sir Mo Farah.
In January 2027, The London Youth Games will be celebrating 50 years of providing sporting opportunities for young people of all abilities in London. Athletes from the Academy may have a chance to support the festivities at various events.
